In the Spring, David Grobe, one of our two Home Repair Specialists, worked with Donna Thomas to replace her water system. Living with her mother and with frequent visits from her grandson, Donna was dealing with a failing gravity fed water system. This turned into them traipsing up the ravine behind the house to switch the source to the brook when the spring went dry and sometimes, when that wasn’t enough, Donna and her grandson would end up hauling jugs of water.
The Green Mountain Home Repair Team provided a low cost loan for the family to drill a new well.
“I’m so happy! Just can’t wait to finally have water, and see it run from the faucet. This is a dream come true!” Wrote Donna when Cushings came to drill.
The work didn’t end there. While the Green Mountain Home Repair Loan was mostly completed with the well work, in the summer the team connected with Vermont Center for Independent Living to partner in funding for the replacement of the steep front stairs with a ramp and other accessible features.
“The ramp is gorgeous; Mom walks down it just for fun!” Donna shared, “She loves it, says she feels free.”
“There is something about having safe access to one’s home that sets this repair apart from the others.” Dave reflected, “It’s a relief, to be safe from the fear of falling.”
