Testimonials

“Buying a home is super overwhelming, and of course you’ve got your realtor, but it’s good to have somebody else to talk to. Everyone was super friendly, super easy to work with. I really can’t say enough good things about them.”

—Shaunna

“I am so grateful for the opportunities presented by WWHT, for their support of our community, and for making it better. I wish everyone could know about Windham & Windsor Housing Trust.”

—Dora

“Having this apartment matters for us because we can live our lives the way we want to. The fact that my son is able to have his own room, his own things — we’ve both gained a lot of independence.”

—Jessica

“I couldn’t be more pleased with Windham & Windsor Housing Trust to have the vision to move forward with [the Bellows Falls Garage], and be persistent because that’s a building that no one was ever going to touch and work with.”

—Robert

“[The Green Mountain Home Repair Program is] an extremely important resource for the community, and it’s particularly helpful for people who don’t have fantastic credit. If you can’t qualify for anything, you can’t fix your property…. We are just so grateful to WWHT for this program — it allowed us to stay in our home. We belong here, and we are very happy.”

—Gianna

“I’m so happy to have my own apartment — it was one of my goals. It’s good to have your own place, you can think more about life. If I need help, I know people are here for me. This is a good place for me.”

—Mike

Letter from Outreach: Thank you for a sweet afternoon

Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7, brought a production of nearly 40 new homes to Windham County - in Gingerbread form – as Windham & Windsor Housing Trust hosted our first-ever Home Sweet Home event. Despite December being an incredibly busy month chock-full of wonderful activities to participate in, we had a good crowd helping us build homes. Our workshop was set up with free home-building kits and candy to decorate, and finished homes and structures were sited on our “designated village center” table, demonstrating compact growth options. Participants left with their creations and two lucky...

Snow Block Elevator Up and Running, Finally

We are so relieved to share that the Snow Block building's elevator has finally been repaired.  As many folks know, this elevator has been down for months and the significant delay of the repair has been frustrating for the residents who live in the building as well as their family members and guests who were also impacted by the situation.  Although we provided tangible support like shopping and laundry service and door-side trash pickup for those who wanted it, the prolonged period of inoperability simply became unbearable.  We understand this and apologize to everyone who...

Development update! Chalet Redevelopment awarded $6.2 m from VT Housing and Conservation Board! The planned redevelopment of the Chalet property will preserve the original Chalet building and create a new neighborhood with a mix of housing types and architectural features. The conceptual design was informed by residents currently living at the Chalet and in the immediate neighborhood, along with municipal staff and staff at Groundworks Collaborative, WWHT’s service partner.

Windham & Windsor Housing Trust acquired the hotel and partnered with Groundworks Collaborative in 2020 as an emergency response to community need during the pandemic. Light rehab was done to establish an immediately available resource for people experiencing chronic homelessness, with an eye toward future redevelopment.

“We are grateful for the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board’s support and commitment to the development of more affordable housing here in Southeastern Vermont,” says Elizabeth Bridgewater, WWHT’s Executive Director. “This funding allows us to continue moving forward with our vision of transforming the Chalet property into a vibrant, sustainable neighborhood with affordability for households earning a range of incomes, and new housing opportunities for our community while taking a meaningful step in reducing Brattleboro’s dire housing shortage.”

The project design includes single family homes for homeownership, townhouses for rental opportunities, new multi-family rental buildings and a community space in the iconic Chalet building which will be renovated with many of its historic features remaining intact. Fifteen homes will be designated as Permanent Supportive Housing, offering a stable environment for people exiting homelessness. The construction of 70 homes in total will move forward in four phases, beginning in late 2025. Once completed, the Chalet property is expected to contribute over $100k annually in taxes to the Town of Brattleboro. Funding for the Chalet Redevelopment project is a public, private partnership.
