BRATTLEBORO — The potential for converting the two upper floors of the Municipal Center into housing units will be explored.

“This is kind of a big deal,” Select Board Chairman Tim Wessel said at a meeting last week, where board authorized the town manager to enter a memorandum of understanding with the Windham & Windsor Housing Trust to begin the work.

The board also approved spending as much as $50,000 for the project from program income, which is federal money that comes from the state in the form of a Community Development Block Grant and is intended for economic development or housing. The town will provide a forgivable loan to the housing trust, meaning the money will not be paid back if the project is not deemed feasible. Wessel called the loan “a worthwhile investment.”
